Zhang is known for his naturalistic depictions of marginalized characters. Using cinematic realism, his films self-consciously convey critical social issues and powerful social messages through their unassuming storylines. This constant struggle between marginalised individuals and society introduces the audience to aspects of Chinese society that are often overshadowed by China’s rapid transformation.
Huanyu, who decides to undergo a sex-change, needs his father’s consent in order to go ahead with the medical procedures. His father, Li Jianguo, a devout Christian, volunteers at a church, only sees transgender identity as a sin and sickness. Liu seeks guidance from others and receives various feedbacks. When Liu Mann, one of his son's transgender friends, commits suicide out of desperation, he renews his effort to better connect with his son. The film examines the LGBT issue which remains a taboo in Chinese society in the way it depicts the relationship between the transgender-wishing protagonist and his family.
