Director’s Biography:

Molly Dineen was born in Canada and brought up inBirmingham, England.She originally studied photography at the Bourneville School of Art and then at theLondon College of Printing, but later switched to cinematography.Sound Business(1981), featuring sound producerLloyd Coxsoneand record store owner Blacker Dread (Steve Burnett-Martin) was her final degree project.She then enrolled in film classes at theNational Film and Television School,where she studied underHerb Di GioiaandColin Young, achieving recognition for her 16mm 1987 debutHome from the Hill.

Synopsis:

An intimate portrait of Jamaican-born reggae producer, businessman, father, son, and community pillar, Blacker Dread .Blacker Dread invites Molly Dineen to film his mother’s funeral, opening the door to his life at a time of personal crisis. Blacker faces his first prison sentence and reflects on the issues that have dogged his last 40 years in the UK – inequality, poverty, crime and racism – and why he sent his youngest child to school in Jamaica.
