Dr. Ajit Suryakant Wadikar was a medical practitioner without any formal training in cinema. Inspired by Robert Rodriguez’s Rebel without a Crew (1995), he learned filmmaking through books while practicing medicine in small town India. He made several educational short films in tribal languages, two short documentaries for UNICEF and, eventually, was commissioned to direct a short film for National Film Archive of India. Y (2019) is his debut feature film.
A couple decides to do something barbaric in the 9th month of their pregnancy. A husband cons his wife. A medical professional shoves his ethics and a woman solely fights against all such evils, mentalities and the system itself and eventually turns a torchbearer? All collide in four interwoven stories.
