Esmaeel Monsef was born in 1976 in Ardebil, Iran. He has directed three short films: Oyan (2010), Under the Colors (2012), Tears (2015) which were presented at Clermont Ferrand, Teluride USA, Leeds, Winterthur FF. As an editor he has worked on feature films such as, A Minor Leap Down, Without Borders and also documentaries such as I Want to be a King, Wining, The Rock and Slowness. Charcoal is his debut feature as a director.
A young man in rural Iran returns home from prison, putting his family into an even more precarious situation, as they are now heavily indebted, trying to pay off the compensations for his crimes.
